Sperm Freezing
Is there an age limit for freezing sperm?
No fixed age limit applies. Many men freeze in their 20s or 30s when sperm quality is typically at its best, though it’s also commonly done before cancer treatment or surgery at any age.
Does freezing affect sperm quality or increase the risk of birth defects?
No. Decades of clinical use show no increased risk of congenital abnormalities from frozen sperm. Some cells may not survive the thaw, but those that do perform comparably to fresh sperm.
How many samples should I freeze for the best chances later?
This depends on your sperm count, motility, and what you’re planning to use it for. Your specialist gives a personalised recommendation after reviewing your semen analysis.
What happens if I can't produce a sample on the day of my appointment?
It happens more often than people expect, and it’s not a problem. We can reschedule, or discuss options like collecting privately beforehand and bringing the sample in within the required window.
Can sperm be surgically retrieved and frozen if I have a zero sperm count?
Yes. For men with azoospermia, sperm can sometimes be surgically extracted directly from the testicle and frozen for later use in ICSI, a route worth discussing with our male fertility team.
Is sedation or anesthesia needed for sperm freezing?
No. Standard sperm freezing only requires a semen sample, collected privately on-site, with no procedure, sedation, or recovery time involved.
